Taking your birds with you

Last year, Doug and I decided to do a RV trip from Seattle to San Francisco in March with the flock.  We rented a Cruise America, loaded up the car and we moved the family....We had a great time but it was a little cramped so in April, we bought a 40 foot Monaco RV.   The space was just right for the two of us and five birds.   The birds love to travel, looking out the windows and chatting with us.

For the Senegal cages, we visited the bird shop where they were raised and bought three 23x15x16 stackable cages.   We found a lightweight aluminum bird stand so all three of the cages can be stacked (when we are stopped) for space.   The greys have larger travel cages.  When on the road, four cages are placed in the dining area and Phinney’s cage is strapped in on the couch.   (lots of bungee cords)   Our longest trip last year was two weeks, from Seattle to St Louis.  In total, we took at least six or seven trips last year.    This was enough of an investment that we are committed to this being our principal mode of travel for the future.  We really enjoy having the birds with us!

You can take your birds with you.   RV travel can be fun and easy with a few common sense precautions.   Use lots of bungee cord, be well provisioned, make sure your birds are well socialized and relax and enjoy the ride. Also, be sure you have a good vacuum cleaner!  It’s also great if you have a good, confident driver!
